BONUS MATERIAL for “Uh Oh”!
“Uh Oh'“ is one of my most favorite songs I’ve ever written. Yes, I like the quirky ones! It’s about…well, you know, when you’ve been in a relationship for a very long time and sometimes you fight. No couple is perfect. If they tell you otherwise, they’re LYING. You fight (or like my mom used to say, “Katie, your father and I don’t fight, we argue.”), you work it out, and then you make up (hopefully). But sometimes when you’re trying to work things out, it kinda feels like what you’re “arguing” over is absolutely ridiculous and is it really worth it anymore and can we just end it and go watch The IT Crowd or Narcos or something? Maybe if we watch the lovely British people be nice to each other while they bake cakes, it will rub off on us?
I have fond memories of recording this song. Backstory: I’d just been booted from The Voice and at the advice of Amanda Palmer and my lawyer, I needed to write, record, and release an album as soon as humanly possible. So with the help of my producer Ian Schreier, I sat at a beautiful Yamaha grande in the gorgeous Manifold Studios and just wrote for hours on end. I poured my heart and soul out, writing songs about love, hurt, hope, angry feminist stuff, rock and roll, and online voyeurism. I didn’t have a band at the time, so I enlisted the help of my favorite musician friends in Raleigh (Keith, Eliot, and Joe), and also grabbed a drummer buddy from Maryland that I’d met while touring with my first band (hi Matt!). We even brought in Joseph Kwon from The Avett Brothers to play cello. All of this happened within a month and it was such a unique and wonderful experience. (BTW- all of this possible because of my AMAZING Kickstarter backers. xoxo)
I made 3 BTS videos for The Darling Misfits album. They’re all available on youtube. If you enjoy the silliness of the above video, watch on, dear friend. I record BTS videos for all the songs I do, although the most recent ones are all exclusive to Patreon, which is how I’ve been funding my recordings and videos for the past few years. As fortunate as I feel to be able to do Kickstarters (and I’ve done a few), it’s wonderful to be able to record one song at a time and not have the pressure of constantly campaigning. Leaves more time for creativity! Yay flexibility. :)
And now for some lyrics so you can sing along!!!!
Uh Oh
We can talk, We can talk, We can talk about it
Doesn't change, doesn't change, doesn't change things one little bit
We can talk, We can talk, We can talk if you want to
We can dig, we can drag feelings back from the dead
Do an autopsy and dissect everything that was said
Or we could do our best to forget all about it
All about it
Or we could let go
Uh oh
What's the worst that could happen if we just went
On with our lives
I know you know that shit was whack
But there's no going back
Learn from the past
And let this love survive
It's an eye for an eye
Is this all in my head?
Did you really mean it when you said you wished I was dead?
Oh my God, act your age
That's no way to behave (You're so impossible)
Plug your ears, walk away like you're in the 5th grade
Lalalalala I can't hear what you say
Oh my God. This is it. This is how we go
Insane
Or we could let go
Uh oh
What's the worst that could happen if we just went
On with our lives
I know you know that shit was whack
But there's no going back
Learn from the past
And let this love survive
We used to get along so well
But now I'm in the front seat and you're driving us to hell
We can talk, we can talk
We can talk, we can talk
We can talk, we can talk
We can talk, we can talk
Or we could let go
Uh oh
What's the worst that could happen if we just went
On with our lives
I know you know I really love you
And we're both a little crazy sometimes
