CHARADE (7/16/2021)

ABOUT THE SONG
I wrote this song to perform in Misfit Cabaret’s “CIRCUS” in February of 2020. Inspired by The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", "Charade" is about the importance of live theater as escapism and how we draw happiness from it. It celebrates the relationship between performer and audience, something that has been absent and sorely missed over the past year.
The lines I recite in "CIRCUS" right before singing this song are:
What is our fascination with circus?/ What is it about this 3 centuries fuss?
Do you come to get lost in our vagabond charm?/ The pretense of danger. The slight twist of arm?
Do you dream of bright colors to break up the gray?/ The scrolling monotony day after day
When your beautiful hearts are in need of a break/ Run away with the circus.
Come with us! Escape!
It's almost a meditative practice, isn't it? Allowing ourselves to stop and be still, to put our lives on hold for a duration of a song or a movie or a live show. We watch others live. We listen to stories outside of ourselves. We learn a new way to think and feel about things- about life, about hardships, survival, and love. We slip into the lives of others and we allow ourselves to dream with our eyes open.
And it makes life much more beautiful.
This is how I feel every time I step onto the Misfit Cabaret stage in the highest heels and tallest wigs I can find- myself but also someone more than me.
Everyone loves a charade. In rose-colored glasses we watch the parade. The bright lights wash away the pain.
Can we lie here forever? All is well within the wires holding us together. Aren't we clever?
This song is dedicated to and inspired by Erik Brown.

LYRICS
Look how the sequins catch the light from the metal cans/ Look how she’s spinning, she’s the candle calls the sailors in/ None of it is real/ Or real enough to feel/ And that’s the appeal/ Smile and hold still/ None of this is ever gonna hurt/ That’s how we turn it off/ We turn it on/ And everyone loves the charade/ In rose-colored glasses we watch the parade/ The bright lights wash away the pain/ Look at the order/ Feel the comfort knowing what is coming/ Automatic thrills/ Everything just as you want it/ Single file down the red velvet aisle/ Get lost in the style/ Dream awake awhile/ None of this is ever gonna change/ We can depend on the plot to stay the same/ And everyone loves the charade/ In rose-colored glasses we watch the parade/ The bright lights wash away the pain/ Can we stay here forever?/ There’s a draft coming from the rips in the tent/ Can we keep hiding from it?/ Can we lie here forever/ All is well within the wires holding us together/ Aren’t we clever?/ None of it is real/ Or real enough to feel/ And that’s the appeal/ Smile and hold still/ Everyone loves the charade/ In rose-colored glasses we watch the parade/ The bright lights wash away the pain
